For years, inadequate and unfair funding has put Illinois near-last in the nation in its support for education, resulting in a shameful achievement gap between students in wealthy and poorer communities.
Research-proven methods to improve classroom quality and boost student achievement are within our reach. But because of the state’s over-reliance on local property taxes to fund schools, Illinois continues to deny too many children the high-quality education necessary to compete in the global economy and succeed in life.
Although a majority of Illinois voters support new revenues to improve school quality and close the achievement gap, our elected officials have failed to take action.
