Public Housing in the Public Interest

Promoting Viable Public Housing across Metropolitan Chicago

Since its formation in 1934, MPC has been committed to the success of public housing, and to the integration of quality homes affordable to very low-income households within the fabric of healthy communities -- with good jobs, good schools, and other amenities.  In recent years, this commitment has led MPC to focus on promoting the success of the Plan for Transformation underway in Chicago, by providing local stakeholders with the information and resources they need to stay informed and engaged in building successful mixed-income communities.

In 2006, the private sector developers selected by the CHA to create 10 viable mixed-income communities within the footprints of former CHA highrises, presented MPC with a challenging assignment:  What will it take to bring needed transit and retail to these new communities?  The outcome of that assignment  was the creation of Reconnecting Neighborhoods.
